The "Palio of the 10 Municipalities"
Each year, in the green medieval moat surrounding the walls of Montagnana, the ritual of the Palio is celebrated — a tradition suspended between history and legend.
The Palio is a thrilling horse race between riders representing ten communities of the ancient Montagnanese “Sculdascia.” Ten jockeys compete in a spectacular contest where skill, strength, and intelligence are essential to win.
In medieval times, the Palio was one of the most typical Italian festivals — a widespread popular celebration used to mark events of special significance to the community, most often through horse races.
The narrative of the Palio dei 10 Comuni is deeply rooted in the complex and intertwined historical events of the region, making it a celebration rich in meaning and emotion.
Date of the event: first Sunday of September.
